Our Story

In the fall of 2012, a group of friends decided to distribute hygiene products to homeless families in downtown San Diego. With the help of family, friends, and colleagues we were able to raise enough money to fund 50 packages. In wanting to ensure that the laws were followed, we reached out to law enforcement to ensure that distributing the packages were within what is allowed.

To our surprised, we were told to be careful since we had such few packages in comparison to the large homeless population. Now frightened by the advice received, many of the images of violence and lawlessness narrated in the media played through our minds. To prepare for the distribution, we decided to take the approach any reasonable person would take if faced with a zombie apocalypse.

On the actual day of the package distribution, we were pleasantly surprised at the gratefulness, kindness, and gentleness of those we served. We were also embarrassed that we were so unaware of the many faces of homelessness, that we almost allowed fear to overcome our kindness. Being able to identify with many of the women with children we met while out on our first visit, we said we have to do more. It was with this in mind that Akhawaty was formed.

What we do

Our mission is to provide stability, security, and support to those who are homeless or facing homelessness. To this end, we have initiated a number of projects that meet the immediate needs of the general homeless population including providing meals, hygiene packages, and winter items.

Since our inception, we have provided services in San Diego California, Atlanta Georgia, and Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Our events and programs are generally staffed entirely by volunteers from the community who want to make a difference in the lives of others.

In 2013, we have served over 3000 individuals or families through our programs in throughout the United States. We are officially incorporated, and  recognized non profit organization under the IRS 501(c)(3) designation. Much of what we are able to do come from donations made by the public.

As we move forward toward our mission, we thank you for your continued support.
